Periodontal maintenance is therapy for your gums following scaling and root planning, also known as deep cleaning. Periodontal means “around the tooth.” As bacteria and plaque collect along the gum line, it causes inflammation in the gum tissue, which can cause the bacteria and plaque to go below your gum line and harden into calculus or tartar.
The build-up starts to release bacteria, which destroys the surrounding bone. This leads to periodontitis, inflammation in the tissues resulting in bone loss, more commonly known as gum disease.
Gum disease is an infection that starts in your mouth, causes gum irritation and can spread throughout the body, putting you more at risk for inflammation in various locations, contributing to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and more.
At SmileOra Dental, we treat gum disease from the start! Treatment for tooth decay at gum line and gum disease is a service we provide, and at your initial appointment, we will complete a full periodontal exam to determine if gum disease is present. If we find periodontal disease, we will proceed with the proper gum disease treatment, including scaling and root planning and thorough cleaning of infected areas below the gum line.
After the patient undergoes a scaling and root planning procedure, we ask that the patient return for a three-month periodontal maintenance therapy program to help preserve the tissues and the foundation of the teeth. This allows us to keep on top of gum disease by checking your pockets and cleaning the teeth and below the gums. Patients who undergo gum surgery are usually on a periodontal maintenance program for life. Patients with proper home care and regular visits can keep the infection at bay and maintain a healthy mouth!
